A Bit Behind...

It turns out that life with three kids is so much busier than I expected it to be! For a stay-at-home mom, I really am not home very much...which means it is hard to write about all the excitement going on around us. So, I will try quickly to catch up…

May is always the craziest month of the year…I know I have said that before and I also know it will only get worse! All three kids are now in spring sports. Colin is trying lacrosse this year and flag football. Lacrosse has been tough because it is totally new. I think by now, he really thinks he knows everything, so being in a position of learning something totally foreign is really uncomfortable. He has been practicing for several weeks and had a scrimmage last night for the first time. I have to admit, I was impressed. Lacrosse is fun to watch (even though I don’t have a clue in the world what is going on!) and he really seems to have learned a lot in a short period of time. Flag football is challenging because it is a summer league through the YMCA for fun, but the other team's coach seems to have not gotten that memo. (but that doesn't prevent Colin from having fun and scoring a few touchdowns!)

Zachary decided to stick with the familiar and play another spring of soccer. He continues to love all the running and can usually score a goal for his team. It is fun to watch him light up every time he is on the soccer field.

Molly is also playing spring soccer. Not much is available to a four year old and she is just thrilled to be doing something like her brothers. She scored a goal in her first game! Now she is happy to just run along with the ball and check to make sure her pink socks are staying clean. She smiles the entire time she is on the field!

In addition to sports, the kids finish up with school too. Molly’s class had several year-end activities. They had a field trip to a YMCA camp where they spent time exploring nature, park field trips, a Mom’s lemonade, and of course the final day of school. It is amazing to look at how much growth there has been for her in just 9 months.

She is not my baby anymore. Molly also finished her dance year with her big recital. It turns out after 9 months of dancing; Molly did not want to perform anymore. It was mostly the hairstyle that caused her apprehension (after her brother’s commented on the curls making her look like someone else)! It took much convincing to even get her to the auditorium. Then just as the recital was to start, the power went out. After an inauspicious start, the recital finally got underway 4 hours late. If getting her ready once was tough, getting her ready again was nearly impossible! I could not have been prouder of my daughter when she finally went willfully to get ready to take her place on the stage. Then right in the middle of the dance, she felt flat on her face with a thud that echoed throughout the auditorium. But, instead of crying or giving up, Molly stood up, found her mark, and continued to dance without losing her smile once. I almost cried I was so proud of her strength. Even her teacher found her after the recital and complimented her on her fabulous recovery.

Zachary also celebrated the end of school with some milestones. His first grade reading class put on a reader’s theater, where the entire first grade performed Aesop’s Fables and showed off how far their reading skills have come over the year.

Then the day before school is out, the kids have their all day field day. This is an all-out FUN day for the kids. It is held at a local park with several fun stations including balloon tosses, hair and face painting, field events and fun snacks. It is a great way to celebrate a year of hard work and get ready for summer vacation. On the last day of school, I looked at him and told him to go back to bed and stay there. When he looked at me with the sad, confused eyes, I told him that I did not want him to get any older than first grade. If he would not finish this day then he could stay my first grader forever. He smiled and said, but I am already a second grader mom! I finished all my work already. Wish I could find a way to keep them from getting bigger!

Colin had so much going on at the end of the year that my head is still spinning. There was the mock trial, poetry slam, author’s study, field day, field trip to the zoo, cribbage tournament, and oh so much more. The Mock Trial was a very cool! His class prepared fractured fairy tails and put them on trial. Colin was the smallest Billy Goat in the Three Billy Goat's Gruff.

Third grade was a big year of learning and again, I can’t believe it is over so fast…although along the way it certainly felt like I too was back in third grade. Colin has turned into a great reader and writer over the year. He won first place in the Word Masters competition for the third grade at his school. He made good friends and had a great year. It was fun to watch him compete in all of his year end competitions and projects and to celebrate all he is growing into.

There have been a hundred funny stories over the last several weeks, but I have not written them down and of course I now can’t remember them all. As they come to me, I will try to get them recorded…but of course summer vacation is now upon us and I am sure there will be stories galore…
