A kid's sense of humor changes over time. When they are really little, they laugh at anything that surprises them or anything out of the ordinary. As they become toddlers and learn language, they understand that words are funny. By the time that they reach preschool, they learn certain words will always get a laugh, like stinky. Nothing is more funny to a preschooler than stinky garbage or stinky underwear. When they enter kindergarten they start to master the joke, starting with knock, knock. And now, in fourth grade, we are noticing that things are getting a bit on the punny side.
Now, I know my fourth grader isn't average. He sees the world a bit differently than most (which he comes by naturally), but it was funny to watch him interact with his cousins over Thanksgiving break. When he is with the older cousins, he gets exposed to things he never gets with his younger siblings. So, he got to watch the movie "Cheaper by the Dozen 2" with his cousins because his siblings would never sit long enough for that type of movie. During the movie, Todd and I overhear the following conversation which made us both laugh:
C: Is their last name Baker?
A: Yep.
C: Wouldn't it be funny if they had 13 kids? That would be totally funny. They should totally have 13 kids with the last name Baker.
A: Why would that be funny?
C: Because then they would be a Baker's Dozen!
Ok, so his cousins didn't get his sense of humor. But we thought it was hilarious that he is finally picking up on word plays in movies. I can tell already that he got the punny gene.
