Molly has been famous for her observations this summer. She is growing up so fast and learning that not everyone does things the same way. So when she attended a play date with all her buddies from Preschool in June, she came home with a very important pronouncement..."Mom, you should get a sewing machine. Then you could actually sew something."
You see I cannot sew. Buttons are a challenge for me, let alone fixing her blanket...or God forbid, sew her a skirt like her friend's moms do! A sewing machine does the sewing for you, she explained. So the machine would solve my sewing problem. Smart girl...except the darn machine may do the sewing, but I would still have to help. I cannot even do that according to my seventh grade Home Ec teacher.
When Rapunzel's dress was torn shortly after this playdate, I fixed it with a rubber band. I also have been known to use safety pins and duck tape to fix things. I approach a sewing problem like my engineering husband would a house problem...and I use the same tools.
Fast forward to August. My birthday is approaching and people are asking what I would like for a present. Molly would pipe up with "a sewing machine!" The look of shock on their face should have been her clue that a sewing machine would not turn her mom into Martha Stewart. But she still had hopes for me. It turns out I wanted a smoothie maker so I could have a healthy dinner on the go while I live in my car driving my kids to activities. I thought a smoothie maker sounded more practical; and so, I got a smoothie maker, not a sewing machine.
Last week, Rapunzel's dress feel apart again. As I fixed the dress with my "tools," my daughter was quick to point out that the sewing machine really would have been a better choice for my birthday present. Thankfully duck tape comes in purple. And tonight, I will work on Rapuzel's new dress while I sip a delicious smoothie while sitting at soccer practice. And I am sure tomorrow, Molly will be quick to point out my duck tape dress is not as cool as a fabric one. But that is ok.
