I decided about 2 years ago to stop taking my kids to a professional place to have yearly pictures done. It was just too hard because I could never get all three of them to cooperate for me at one time. It was about then that I bought myself a DSLR camera and decided to just take pictures myself. The result being me capturing my children as they are, not how someone else thinks they should be.
This year I was thrilled to learn a little about how to take pictures before I took these shots. I was happy with the results. They capture Colin smirky, Zach snarky, and Molly charming. Zach often refuses to smile in pictures and I told him that if that was how he was going to be, then that is how I would capture him for all time.
During this exercise, I did learn a bit about lighting and how my camera focuses. I took a lot of pictures of my kids and these are really the only ones that turned out. I love how I now know how to get the background blurred so that you only see the person. On accident, I learned how if you photograph in shade with a bright background it messes with your lighting.
I guess the old saying "practice makes progress" is true for Mom's too.
