The Tooth Fairy.

Who ever thought up a fairy that comes to take your old teeth and leave you money? How in the world is that believable? Santa Claus is the one that gets questioned most often and the Easter Bunny and Tooth Fairy are believable? I mean if you ask me, nice man who leaves you gifts once a year is the most believable. The tooth fairy is not really believable at all unless you think the Peter Pan story has some merit. A bunny who hops around the world leaving eggs and candy is so far from rational that I have no idea how two year olds even fall for it. Yet as a mom, here I am continuing to tell these unbelievable stories to my kids and hope they buy into them a little longer.

Zachary has not believed in Santa since he was three. Don't get me wrong, we keep lying to him, but he tests us on the facts each and every year (and then I wonder why he never listens to me, connection?). Yet somehow, he is all ready to believe in the tooth fairy (or maybe the whole NEXRAD Santa Tracker worked so well that now all crazy parent stories are believable?). So when he lost a tooth on Saturday, I thought for sure this was the moment that he would let on that he doesn't believe. But, he just asked "Mom, are you the tooth fairy?" and I answered "No, not me." With that, he put the tooth under his pillow and went to sleep (Todd is the tooth fairy, so technically I didn't lie). In the morning, there was a dollar under his pillow and all was good.

But then I started thinking...

The last tooth that Colin lost was the one that pushed him over the edge. He begged for the truth and when I told him that Dad is the one that puts the money under his pillow, he seemed sad. He seemed even sadder to learn that once you insist on the truth, the tooth fairy never visits again. Maybe he warned his brother!

I have warned them both that once they stop believing in Santa, he stops coming. It will be interesting to see if Zach questions Santa this coming December. If he accepts the whole story with no NEXRAD proof then I know he knows the truth and just doesn't want to loose the presents! I am glad I have smart kids who know a good thing when they've got it because I like Santa, EP and the tooth fairy visits too!
